The median income for a family of four in the US is roughly $125,000. The cost of necessities plus taxes for a family of four is $135,00 annually. According to SmartAsset, to live comfortably in the US, a family of four needs $235,000. That’s paying for necessities plus saving 20% for the future/pay down debt and having 30% to spend on wants in addition to needs. In other words, the American Dream for a family of four costs $235,000. Only around 10% of the families in this country earn enough to live comfortably.
But wait! It somehow gets worse. Since 1990 the average real wage for the top 10% of earners has increased by 52%. For the bottom 90%? The increase over the last 30 years has been just 15%. It isn’t a mirage. The rich are getting richer and while the vast majority of this country lags behind.
It's simple. Our leaders have forsaken prosperity for most of the country. The policies of Republicans and Democrats over the last thirty years has poured most of the wealth generated by this country into the pockets of a few. When you look at the top 1%, the billionaires, well, their income has increased by 160%. That’s ten times the increase seen by the rest of us. Republicans and Democrats have sold the American Dream to the billionaires who finance their campaigns.
That’s why people in this country are angry. That’s where the divide really exists. When Republicans blame immigrants for your lack of income growth and say tax cuts for the wealthy are in your best interest, they are lying to you. When Democrats say they fight for the middle class, they are lying to you. Neither is addressing your problems. Neither has a plan to improve your life.
